Project Description

Located in the industrial hub of Selaata, the SHD facility is a key player in the edible oil sector. ISPC was contracted to execute a comprehensive revamping of the facility’s storage infrastructure. The project aimed to rehabilitate aging oil storage tanks and modernize the piping network to ensure the safe, hygienic, and efficient handling of bulk liquid products, complying with both industrial safety codes and food-grade storage standards.

Scope of Work

1. Tank Revamping & Rehabilitation:

  • Shell Repair: Cutting and replacing corroded steel plates on existing storage tanks to restore structural integrity.

  • Bottom Plate Replacement: Removing old tank floors and welding new annular plates and bottom sketches to prevent soil contamination and product loss.

  • Roof Structure: Reinforcing the fixed roof structures and installing new vents and breathers to manage internal pressure changes during filling and emptying.

2. Process Piping Network:

  • Piping Fabrication: Fabrication and erection of interconnecting piping systems between storage tanks, pump stations, and loading bays.

  • Valve Integration: Installation of industrial gate and check valves to control flow direction and isolation.

  • Support Systems: Erection of steel pipe racks and sleepers to support the new piping layout across the facility.

3. Surface Treatment & Protection:

  • Sandblasting: Cleaning steel surfaces to SA 2.5 standards to remove old paint and rust.

  • Coating: Application of specialized food-grade epoxy coatings for internal surfaces (to protect the oil) and marine-grade paint for external surfaces (to withstand the coastal Selaata environment).

Key Challenges & Solutions

  • Challenge: The Selaata facility is located directly on the Mediterranean coast, subjecting the infrastructure to severe saltwater corrosion and high humidity.

  • Solution: ISPC utilized a specific multi-layer coating system designed for C5-M (Marine High Corrosivity) environments, ensuring the rehabilitated tanks and pipes would resist rust for years to come.

Results

The project significantly extended the operational lifespan of the storage facility and improved the efficiency of oil transfer operations. The revamped tanks and piping network passed all hydrostatic and leakage tests, ensuring zero product loss.
